Country Furniture and Accessories: Decorating a Hill Country Retreat

Country furniture and accessories can make a room feel warm and cozy.    A Hill Country retreat can create a world that is both comfortable and elegant.  From the overstuffed couches to the heavy wood tables to the wrought iron accents, your home will be a place to restore and replenish your spirit—a retreat from a world that can be cold and unforgiving.  When you decorate your home, you want it to be the place of your dreams.

Imagine an empty room, the windows looking out over a lush countryside.  You want the space to make you feel as if the walls had disappeared and the room was a part of the landscape.  Perhaps it has hardwood floors, a beautiful stone wall with a fireplace, and large windows with wooden sills.  It’s an empty canvas waiting for the hand of an expert artist.

You decide to start with a sofa and, let’s say, two beautiful armchairs.  They have overstuffed leather and cloth cushions and are incredibly comfortable—a wonderful beginning.  Now that the room has an anchor, it’s time for the next layer.  You add a huge coffee table that everyone can share, with the sofa and chairs loosely arranged around it.  Think of the conversations you will enjoy around such a pleasant and inviting space.

Next, consider the end tables—perhaps a wrought iron table for each side of the couch, or wooden cabinets that could function as both end table and storage.  A rug could be used to draw the pieces of furniture together in a unique and beautiful way.  You could add a long, low table under the largest window to bring the rest of the room into the picture.
