Decorating Ideas, Redesigning Tips

How to Decorate an Eclectic Living Room

Posted on January 22nd, 2018 by Hannah.

What does eclectic home decorating mean to you? Historically, it’s defined as having “no particular style.” For some, this can be a confusing design motto, for others, it might be exactly what you’re envisioning for that living room decorating project. This type of decorating asks for a mix of old and new — trends, time periods, colors, etc. The key is balance and scale. With a few tips and tricks, your living room will have that eclectic personality without being overly mismatched.

  • Think complementary. Even though eclectic style can be a jumble, consider how each element of your living room (i.e. sofa, table, lamp, storage basket) complements each other. This drives a cohesive flow.
  • Choose an accent color. Be colorful, but again, consider cohesiveness and balance. A good tip is picking a neutral base and one accent color. When you’re choosing décor pieces like lampshades, side tables and ottomans, find a color in one item and match it. For example, choose the olive green in the mid-century couch you have to spread throughout the living room.
  • Bridge furniture styles together. To avoid randomness, choose furniture pieces that have similar scale and symmetry. For example, buy accent chairs that share colors or textures.
  • …speaking of textures, mix it up! Find and layer different textures in your selection of rugs, pillows and throws while keeping complementary colors in mind.
  • Don’t overdo it. You might have the urge to find more, buy more and decorate more — don’t. This is one of the easiest ways to turn your eclectic living room into chaos.

Home decorating is an extension of you. You put a lot of thought behind each sofa, throw pillow and lamp — everything that curates your eclectic living room. Buying something that you find joy in creates the space you always wanted to have and entertain in.
