5 Professional Tips for Cleaning Throw Pillows

Posted on August 2nd, 2018 by Hannah.

Decorative pillows are one of the easiest ways to add flair to your living space. However, dingy, dirty or dull throw pillows can have the opposite effect by detracting from the beauty of your home rather than enhancing it. The good news? You don’t have to settle for less than perfect when it comes to the appearance of your throw pillows. Instead, use these five professional decorative pillow cleaning tips instead.

1. Read the care label.

Some throw pillow covers are very delicate and require special care. Others can simply be tossed in the washing machine. Your first step? Determining the best cleaning method for each pillow. The manufacturer’s label should provide details regarding cleaning. Following these recommendations will keep your throw pillows looking vibrant and fresh.

As a general rule of thumb, cotton and synthetic fibers can both be cleaned with water, while silk and velvet fabrics require dry cleaning fluid. If the throw pillow is without a tag, default to the gentlest cleaning method.

2. Test before proceeding.

Testing your cleaning method in an inconspicuous area of the fabric before proceeding can spare you the heartache of accidentally damaging your pillows. Using a white towel dampened with either water or fabric-specific cleaning fluid, gently dab at the soiled area. Hold for a few seconds, then check the towel for signs of color transfer which indicate that this method of cleaning is not suitable. After allowing the spot to dry, inspect the area for signs of damage, such as spotting and fading.

3. Hand wash, whenever possible.

After determining the ideal cleaning solution, spot cleaning a throw pillow cover is the safest technique — particularly if it is intricately adorned or especially delicate. If necessary, follow up by hand washing your throw pillows with a cleaning solution. Remember: gentle supplies and methods are always preferable when it comes to cleaning throw pillows.

4. Launder with delicates.

If you choose to machine wash your throw pillow cases, launder them as you would any delicate items using a mesh laundry bag and the delicate cycle. Again, it’s important to use the mildest possible detergent. For deeply soiled pillows, a color-safe prewash spray can help remove stains.

5. Air or Tumble Dry.

While air drying is the best method, it is possible to dry throw pillow cases in the dryer using the lowest no-heat setting, such as tumble, air dry, or fluff. After removing the decorative pillowcases from the dryer, hang them or lay them out flat to maintain their shape and allow to dry completely before re-stuffing.

One last thing to keep in mind regarding the question of how to clean throw pillows? If you’re dealing with a fragile decorative pillow or a throw pillow that can’t be removed from its case, taking it to a professional can be an invaluable protective measure. While it may cost more, professional cleaning is an investment in the life of the pillow, the appearance of your home, and your own peace of mind.
