The weather outside may be frightful, but the holidays are all about the warmth that comes from within. If your home is feeling more cold than cozy, follow these five tips to make your home feel cozy this season.
1. Light it up.
It may be the most wonderful time of year, but it’s also the time of year with the least amount of daylight — which can add up to some seriously dreary interiors. Avoid giving in to the darkness by bringing in more light.
Candles and twinkle lights are a great place to start. We challenge anyone to feel like a Scrooge in a room all aglow. The right lamps, meanwhile, can add soft, beautiful light to your space.
2. Add luxurious layers.
Nothing evokes a feeling of coziness quite like bundling up under a fluffy blanket or fuzzy throw. Now is a good time to swap out lighter weight linens and cottons for heavier knits, velvets and faux furs. Now is also a great way to bring in more holiday hues and textures. This doesn’t mean going full-on red and green, however. Warm, neutral colors like ivory, gray and brown are especially soothing while gold, brass and copper metallics add a hint of refined exuberance.
An added benefit of layering on the textiles as the days and nights grow colder? You’ll have an extra reason to feel jolly when your heating bill arrives.
3. Consider a tree in your bedroom.
Can you think of a cozier concept than falling asleep and waking up to the glow of a Christmas tree in your boudoir?
4. Appeal to all of the senses.
We’ve already covered sight and touch, but true holiday feels are a multi-sensory experience. Enter scented candles, holiday potpourri, and holiday music. Don’t be afraid to explore less conventional options here, too. Interior designer Logan Yost told The New York Times, “Rather than go for the obvious pine or cinnamon, I do Moroccan Amber candles and reed diffusers…It provides an earthy, wintry, super-sexy backdrop that makes you want to light a fire and drink too much bourbon.”
Now all you’ve got to do is throw a pot of your favorite comfort soup or stew on the stove and you’ll have all five senses covered.
5. Bring the outdoors indoors.
Did you know that there’s an amazing place to source Christmas decorations just beyond your front door? Gather your loved ones and head outside to gather branches, greenery and berries, then use what you’ve collected for everything from mantle adornments to centerpieces.
Simple or rustic wood pieces, meanwhile, give a nod to classic and oh-so-cozy ski lodge chic.
One last thing to keep in mind while cozying up your home for the holidays? While there’s nothing wrong with a classic Christmas theme, less traditional home decor schemes are also appealing. Designer Kylee Trunck told The Times, “We’re seeing a shift from holiday-specific décor to pieces that work together to evoke more of a feeling or spirit of the season. Things like faux fur, rustic wood finishes, metallics, plaids and greenery are less overtly holiday-themed, but they bring a cozy and magical feeling to spaces.”
