Winter Warmth: Ultra-Cozy Decorating Tips

Velvet ensemble for winter with Stowers Furniture

Chilly winter temps don’t have to get you down this season… especially when you feather your nest with cozy and inviting design elements guaranteed to combat the cold-weather blues. “One way to embrace the cold and dark is to just go with it like a hibernating animal and nestle indoors with cozy winter textures. As you switch out your closet items from cotton and flip-flops to wool and corduroy, approach your home with the same sensibility,” says Houzz editor Becky Harris.

From satiny chenille chairs to hand-loomed wool beds, you’ll find plenty of ways to warm up your space in our 80,000 square foot showroom — including the option to build custom-upholstered furnishings in our complimentary Design Center. Continue reading below for some helpful notes from the experts to inspire a cozy home makeover of your own.

Fuzzy Feelings

Layering textures on top of textures is the name of the game in the winter, especially if your home is a carpet-less one. Better Homes & Gardens editors note: “Although wood floors create a sophisticated style statement year-round, you’ll need to cozy them up for the cold winter months. For a unique style statement, layer one rug on top of another to add more visual interest.” Diverse texture combinations like black and white calf and axis deer hides, and New Zealand wool and pure silk and Icelandic sheepskin make for an ideal layered look.

Wildly soft sheepskin is a must-have in every room. “We love adding sheepskin to dining chairs to make them ready for colder weather. Draping a sheepskin throw can make a simple dining chair feel more luxurious and sophisticated and also adds a nice softness,” designers Caroline Grant and Dolores Suarez tell Apartment Therapy. Accessorize dining and living areas with furry throws and Tibetan lamb pillows from BS Trading Company (we have them in dozens of chic hues!), or opt for an all-in-one piece like this button-tufted Universal Furniture sofa, which features quilted fabric and plush sheepskin cushions.

How to Hygge

“Pronounced ‘hoo-ga,’ this Danish concept cannot be translated to one single word, but encompasses a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life,” Country Living Lifestyle Editor Lyndsey Matthews explains. “If you’ve ever enjoyed reading a book indoors on a rainy Sunday or a cup of hot cocoa on a snow day, you’ve experienced hygge without even knowing it.” Even if you don’t have a roaring fireplace in your home, you can still create the signature warmth of “hygge” with a cozy spot to enjoy conversation with your favorite people. Arrange various pieces into a circle, and don’t forget the sumptuous materials! Look for seating like buttery leather sofas by Hancock and Moore, overstuffed velvet armchairs by Universal Furniture, and cushioned benches by Theodore Alexander. The only thing missing is a few luxurious fur throw blankets to keep the cordial chats going long into the evening.
