Looking for a way to make your home distinctive? Mixing patterns and textures can add visual interest to a space, but it must be done with care! Pattern mixing is truly an elusive and difficult art form. However, it is safe to assume that for most, our own personal version of mixing patterns in our interior design will lie somewhere between following the rules and taking small risks. As with most things in life, starting small is always advisable. This guide will help you mix patterns in your home without overwhelming.
Forge a Common Link
Every interior design needs a solid foundation to set the tone for the entire space, and this extends to the patterns you choose. Forge a common link that holds everything together, such as a shape, color palette, or decor style. Whatever your choice, let that link weave its obvious yet subtle way throughout your wall art, modern furniture, rugs, window dressings, and other pieces of furniture.

These large and small floral wall pieces accent the hanging mirror and bring a nice pop to the tan wall.
Start Small with Large Patterns
While beginning with small additions, the experts suggest starting with a large pattern to give obvious contrast. When adding a large pattern, be sure to match scale with scale. A large pattern on large draperies, rugs, or artwork looks best. Liven up any area with the addition of this 100% hand-tufted wool red coral rug from Global Views. An adaptable design and attractive look makes this rug a perfect solution to providing both patterned style and utility.
Be Careful Mixing Metaphors
Mixing patterns is not anathema to good interior design, but a word of caution. Even if linked with the same color or shape, some patterns just do not play nice together. If you want to experiment with mixing patterns and shapes, do some research first. Locate some examples of the shapes and designs you prefer and how they are used together; or more importantly, how they are not used together. For example, this patterned table lamp features a simple color and pattern that can easily connect to a variety of different color and pattern choices.

An easy way to keep your home looking fresh and relaxed is with a patterned rug.
Avoid Competing Colors
We spoke above about the importance of a common link that binds your pattern choices together, and no doubt color is a great way to forge this link. However, using multiple colors can complicate the process of choosing and mixing patterns. If you are new to mixing patterns, stick with simple color choices and combinations. Consider this Monaco chaise ottoman by Rowe. The basic color and self-welt detailing throughout add texture and visual interest but allow for the addition of bold patterns or colors.
The various patterns and colors in any room should combine and balance with each other to present one united story. Too many variations confuse the eye and upset the balance. Pattern mixing has rules, and although some rules cry out to be broken, some are absolute.
