How to Set Up the Most Stylish Gallery Wall

Posted on November 7th, 2017 by Hannah.

The gallery wall. You’ve seen it everywhere. You love it. You’ve wondered, “how can I create that in my own house?” You’ve come to the right place. The gallery wall is like your own personal museum; it’s a collaged display of your personality. To get it right, you’ll need to use a few tricks and do some planning, but you can do it! Here’s what you need to set up your gallery wall, and how you can get it right without nailing too many holes in your wall.

Oil paintings in living room

Your Gallery Wall Supplies List:

  • Your favorite art and/or photos
  • Different types of frames
  • Pencil
  • Hammer and nails
  • Level
  • Parchment paper or butcher paper
  • Painter’s tape

Got all of your supplies? Now you’re ready to plan your gallery and put it together.

Gallery Wall Expert Tips:

  1. Diversify your frames, but stick to a specific color scheme. If you choose to go monochrome, pick various sizes and textures of black, white and gray frames. This helps create a more cohesive feel.
  2. Pay attention to scale, texture and color. The key is balance. Pair your gallery wall with both bold, textured paintings with softer graphic prints or photos. Sizes also matter – you want a balance of smaller and larger frames here as well.
  3. Choose an anchor piece and work around it. This tip isn’t mandatory, but an anchor piece can help your gallery wall feel grounded.
  4. Lay out everything you have on the floor. You can arrange and rearrange as you please. Laying it out avoids the hassle of rehanging and the holes in the wall we mentioned above.
  5. Do a mockup. This is why you need the paper and painter’s tape. You can trace paper templates of your frames and tape them on the wall in your planned arrangement/placement. This will help you visualize your wall…again, without putting extra holes in your wall.
