How To Create A Productive Home Office

Posted on December 3rd, 2016 by Hannah.

Recent research reveals that 50% of workers in the United States hold jobs that are compatible with at least partial working from a home office or another remote location, and approximately 20-25% of the workforce teleworks with some frequency. In addition, 80% to 90% say they would like to telework at least part time.

Do you work remotely, or just want to enjoy a productive space in your home for when you need to get work done outside the office? This guide will help you to create a productive, relaxing home office with the right office chairs, desks, lamps, and accessories to help increase your comfort and efficiency.

When it comes to creating a comfortable and productive home office, there are 4 key components.

Free Space – No one can work effectively in a sea of noise or interruptions. When planning your office area, ensure that it affords a degree of privacy from surrounding activities. Be sure to set aside enough room for moving around in addition to space dedicated to furnishings, storage, and equipment. In addition, consider whether or not you will be dealing with clients on site, making additional space for comfortable furniture and decor necessary. Ask yourself these questions as you plan for the necessary space:

– What will I be doing in the space?

– What type of work needs to be done?

– Will external clients be visiting the space?

– Will colleagues visit for collaborative work?

– What type of materials will be referenced and/or stored?

– What type of equipment is required?

– When will I be doing the bulk of my work?

– Will I be making conference calls?

– Will I be video conferencing?

Comfort – Nothing hinders productivity like discomfort or pain. Sitting in an uncomfortable chair with little or no support for long periods of time can lead to back problems. Chair manufacturers have made significant improvements in adjustability and comfort for home office users. Task chairs reflect professional research and design. The ideal chair for your home office should be:

– Ergonomically designed for support

– Wheeled for quick mobility on hard or carpeted floors

– Built to last

This leather Executive Swivel Chair features small nail-head trim, steel casters, and optional gas lift and knee-tilt. It is ergonomically constructed to support your back and legs and is warranted for quality, long-lasting construction.

Lighting – Any workspace should be well-lit for the tasks to be performed, but without undue glare. Ideally, try to provide as much natural daylight as possible. If your space has a window, it will enhance the lighting. Daylight is the most evenly balanced source of white light available. Home offices will likely feature writing or digital tasks, so any lighting you choose should be soft and offset to prevent distracting reflections from computer screens. This 88″ Pacific Coast Lamp is the perfect combination of bright light and versatility. Place this stylish lamp nearby and adjust to provide just the right amount of light for your project.
Adequate Work Surfaces – Every work area requires adequate space to complete the necessary projects, even in the home. When mixing home and office, keep style in mind with this European style Writing Desk. The relaxed styling and neutral color tone of the Vintage White finish create a home office that is more home than office, and yet provide the necessary space for work. At 64″ wide by 32″ deep by 30-1/8″ tall, this desk also features a cord port, pull-out keyboard drawer, and 5 storage drawers.
