Sweet Spot: Decorating With Shades of Pink

The color pink has long been dismissed as overtly girly and frivolous, but since the emergence of Millennial Pink (AKA “Tumblr Pink”) around 2013, designers and decorators have championed its use in crafting stylish and undeniably photogenic interiors. “In a subtle tone, pink can be extremely sophisticated,” interior designer Caleb Anderson tells Architectural Digest.“It can also be masculine, as well as historic. When it comes to design, it has a fascinating complexity.” Harness pink’s versatile power in your own home with colorful additions of all scales, from room-defining furniture that’s designed to wow, to understated accents that serve up the perfect hint of the trending hue.

Sizable Statements

Turn up the volume in your most-used space with ultra vibrant upholstery that speaks for itself. An attention-grabbing piece like this velvet Jonathan Charles sofa turns traditional living room seating on its ear. “Statement furniture can make or break a room, and plush, vintage-inspired seating can transform a simple living space into a thoroughly regal affair. Pair with gold finishes for an elegant, Art Deco vibe that Jay Gatsby would be proud of!” says MSN journalist Jen Grimble. Classic, retro-infused shapes like the Uttermost Arieat Armchair and the Lexington Winthrop Chair appear particularly fresh and of-the-moment rendered in pale pinks and peachy graphic prints.

Rugs provide an easy avenue for a swift design revamp without a serious commitment. “A blush rug shows how to introduce an element of soft, neutral sophistication without sacrificing the bold, modern, masculine vibe of the space… [a] dusty rose rug brings warmth and approachability,” explains MyDomaine editor Jonathan Steinitz. Update the look and feel of any room with a handmade pink rug by family-owned favorite Nourison: Our in-store Rug Pavilion is home to designs like this airy diamond-print shag, this striking (and reversible!) ikat style, and many more.

The Subtlety of Accessories

Touches of pink decor pack a more substantial punch than you’d think, and create a foundation to bring additional rosy hues into the picture. Decorilla interior designer Addie F. details: “Artwork is a fabulous way to introduce several different pink elements into your home. Artwork[s] with pink in them can often serve as inspiration, too. Use the other colors in the painting… to help coordinate more colorful accents in your home.” Abstract pieces like this vivid oil on canvas from IMAX Corporation or this kinetic cow portrait from Uttermost feature complementary and analogous colors you can add throughout the space to further elevate the art and draw eyes to it.

In the case of other decorative accents, look for textural elements to make a visual impact. The stylized leaf details on this ceramic vase help it stand out on bookshelves and coffee tables, while a pair of these sleek lamps with crocodile-embossed shades will make bedside tables pop.
