Your bedroom is your sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, bedroom design becomes an afterthought for many people. After all, the main living areas of a home see lots of activity and traffic, while bedrooms are our most private spaces. When you think about it, though, doesn’t that make your bedroom’s design even more meaningful?
Read our roundup of five bedroom ideas to give you inspiration to design a simple and sophisticated space based on the principle that less is more.
1. Stick with soothing shades.
Color is an important part of all interior design, but it’s especially important in bedrooms. And while there’s a time and place for bright and vibrant hues, steer clear of overdoing it. Instead, use neutral and/or muted shades to set a calming atmosphere. Sticking with a monochromatic palette can help achieve a streamlined and harmonious look, but feel free to introduce pops of color which can be swapped in and out depending on your mood or the season. Blues, greens, taupes, and grays are go-to colors for interior designers when decorating bedrooms, but peach, lavender and pale yellow can also be calm and inviting.
2. Choose an attention-drawing bed.
Basic design theory holds that every room requires a focal point, i.e., an item that draws your attention. While many elements of a space can serve as a focal point, beds are a simple and natural focal point in bedrooms. In addition to choosing a dramatic bed in the style of your choice, get luxurious linens that feel as good as they look. Complement these by incorporating a variety of textures throughout the space, including luxurious linens such as silk draperies or a cashmere throw. Of course, it’s not all only about how a bed looks. Choosing the right mattress is an investment in your quality of sleep — one of life’s most sought-after commodities.
3. Scale to your space.
Furniture should fit the room in which it lives. In other words, an oversized bed may be a grand addition to 400 square feet of space, but it will have a very different effect in a room half that size. Conversely, a small bed may be overwhelmed by a cavernous bedroom. A general rule of thumb? A large bedroom calls for larger furniture, while a small bedroom calls for smaller furniture. 4. Store smart.
Clutter is the enemy of relaxation. In fact, research shows that mess actually causes stress by overly stimulating our minds, distracting our attention away from what we want to be focusing on, and inhibiting creativity, according to Psychology Today. Having plenty of storage in your bedroom can help minimize stress and maximize serenity. In addition to dressers and armoires, storage-boosting spaces include wall shelves, bedside tables, trunks, and storage benches.
5. Layer on the lighting.
The most exquisitely decorated bedroom will fall short of its potential without the right lighting in place. Just like color, the right lighting can support both atmosphere and ambiance. It can also make a room feel bigger and warmer. Designer Nadia McCowan Hill told Country Living, “Take a layered approach to lighting with different light sources across different levels to create ambience and interest in a room. Use lighting to make the most of a room’s size and shape — uplighting makes a room feel larger, low hung pendants will create an illusion of height and clusters of lighting make large rooms seem cozier.” However, there is one caveat when it comes to lighting. “Too many different styles in a sordid array throughout the home can be confusing on the eye and will cause uneasiness,” continued Hill. Remember: consistency equals simplicity.
One last thing to keep in mind when decorating a simple bedroom? These are guiding tips, not hard rules. What says tranquility to one person may say something different to someone else. More than anything else, use your own taste and personal preferences to design a balanced and blissful bedroom.
