Easy Ways to Achieve Minimalist Design

“Design is not making beauty, beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love.” – Louis Kahn

Would you consider yourself a minimalist? With the new year…do you want to become a minimalist? This particular design style asks for simplicity, intention and restraint. Minimalist design asks for you to utilize your space, proportion and lighting. To some, minimalism comes off cold and empty, but there’s more to it. It’s beyond vast white walls and bland colors. With these easy tips, minimalist design can bring warmth, function and tidiness to your home.

  1. Start with the basics.
Evaluate your home’s space and ask yourself, “What’s essential?” Does your coffee table have clutter from circulars, magazines and unopened mail? Keep your space tidy by making use of designated baskets and trays, instead of putting papers wherever is closest to you in that moment.
  2. Consider a change in color palette.
When it comes to color, yes, a minimalist’s color palette is more subdued than your bold reds or oranges. However, neutral colors paired with greys and pastels can add light to your home. Choose one or two colors, and then add textured elements such as velvet pillows or chunky knitted throws that follow these colors. Textured accessories add much-needed dimension. Below are examples of accessories that can elevate your space.
  3. Quality versus quantity.
Minimalism is about intention and function. Splurging on a high-quality piece of furniture forces you to consider if that specific sectional will be worth it 10 years down the road. We wrote a guide on three pieces of furniture that are worth the investment so that you ask the right questions before making the big purchase.

Minimalist Décor Ideas:

  • Knitted throws
  • Beaded pillows
  • Textured rugs (i.e. sheepskin rug)
  • Velvet accents
  • Simple artwork or decorative vases

You may already have what you need to transform your living room into something more simple and sophisticated. It may not be easy to throw something away, but less can really be more. After pairing down to only keeping things that are purposeful, you might try minimalist design in another room of your house!
