Four Tips for Choosing the Perfect Art for Your Home

Posted on July 10th, 2018 by Hannah.

Art is one of the simplest ways to breath life into your living space. But art is about much more than aesthetics, it’s also about expression. The art you choose for your home represents you. However, with so many art options out there, how do you choose art that says what you want it to say? Start with these four tips.

1. Own what you love.

While much of picking out home decor is governed by spoken and unspoken rules, art is a personal choice in which there is no right and wrong. As artist Zoë Pawlak told MyDomaine, “Art is a place for expression through color, content, and texture. Choose art at a heart level, and don’t forget about sculptures and rugs!”

Trusting your instincts is important, but some considerations are necessary, such as scale. “You don’t want to put a beautiful but tiny artwork on its own on a big white wall, or a huge artwork that chews up so much visual space that it overtakes everything in the room. If you intend to move the piece around your home or to move house at some stage, you might want to focus on pieces that are fairly ‘standard’ size, i.e., not too big and not too small,” advised interior designer Nelly Reffet to HouseNerd.

2. Anchor your aesthetic.

Buying art that you love isn’t a complete free-for-all. Because even though you want your art to be eclectic, cohesion is essential. A room can end up looking cluttered and confused if its elements don’t work together. One tip for achieving a streamlined final result? Start with an anchor piece. As you continue to decorate, you can choose other art pieces that carry elements of your anchor piece. Another way to anchor disparate art pieces? Choose the same materials when framing them.

This doesn’t mean a space’s art must be matchy-matchy. Art consultant Daniel Kinkade for Huffington Post, “Don’t try to match your art to the room. Instead, contrast and complement the space with art so it works with the room and doesn’t get lost.”

3. Consider your message.

Your home speaks for you, and art is an easy way to determine what it says. Do you want a room to feel cozy and comfortable, grand and dramatic, or restful and relaxing? If a piece of art makes you feel a certain emotion, it will likely have the same impact when added to your living space.

4. Wait it out.

Many homeowners rush out and buy art en masse in an attempt to conquer their empty walls. However, rash purchases can quickly lose its allure. In order to ensure that your selections will still wow you months and years from now, take your time when buying art. “Fine art should never be a ‘maybe,’ and should thrill you every single day,” continues Kinkade.

Another reason to wait? Art can help you fill a void that may only become apparent after a room is otherwise complete. Designer David Bromstad told SheKnows, “Does the room need some humor? Does it need something abstract? Does it need a piece of pop art? To me, wall art is like that little cherry on top of a sundae — it just makes it.”

Thomas Merton said, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” These four tips can help you choose art that creates visual appeal, sets the tone, and elevates your space.
