As a matter of fact, lighting is one of the most important design elements you can give to your home. It can dramatically change the atmosphere. Did you know? There are three categories of lighting.

1. Task lighting is primarily used for…tasks like reading, sewing or sketching. You’ll find these lights to be more direct and bright.

2. Ambient lighting is usually for the whole space such as overhead lighting.

3. Finally, accent lighting is used to showcase a specific piece of art or architectural piece of your house. Using different kinds of lighting gives you more balance, as long as you know how to layer it.

Layer your lighting

Like we mentioned earlier, using different kinds of light gives balance and comfort to your home. Even if you have the common overhead light, adding different styles is an easy way to update your interiors. If you want to add layered lighting to your living room, use a mix of floor and table lighting. Have fun and play around with shade and base styles to avoid looking too match-y.

Add dimmer switches to your home

Dimmer switches are overlooked but highly recommended by expert designers. These work perfectly in your dining room, giving you an easy way to change the ambiance at your next dinner party.

Invest in a dramatic light fixture

…and make sure you pay attention to scale. You don’t want the fixture to look too small and provide minimal light, but you don’t want it to take over your space either. A unique overhead light fixture can be your focal point and set the theme for your entire room.

Utilize your natural light

If you’re lucky to have an abundance of windows, maximize that natural lighting! Natural light opens up space, boosts your mood and saves you money on your energy bill. If you’re limited, hanging a mirror on the opposite wall of your window is an easy want to increase natural lighting in your home.
