Six Simple Ways to Refresh Your Home Office

Posted on January 1st, 2018 by Hannah.

The term “home office” has gotten a new definition aside from answering mail, preparing taxes and paying bills. Today, many people use the home office as their primary workstation. Working from home can be convenient and enjoyable, unless you feel your productivity is affected. It’s important to create a personal working environment that you love and can feel productive. Here are simple ways you can give your home office an update and get excited about working from home!

  1. Invest in style and function.
Using the extra kitchen chair is not ideal for long periods of sitting and working. You and your back deserve more than that. Investing in a supportive chair for your home office can make a huge difference and is worth every penny.
  2. Get organized!
Mess can disrupt your productivity and motivation. Would you want to work in an office with piles of paper on your desk and a tangle of tech cords? Keep your tech cables neat, and your papers and resources in proper storage (i.e. shelves, file cabinets, etc.).
  3. Go green.
Liven up your office with greenery. Real or artificial plants are every interior designer’s trick to adding warmth to a room. Plants have also been found to reduce stress and increase productivity. For those who want to try their hand at real plants, orchids and cacti are good low-maintenance plants to start with.
  4. Keep yourself inspired.
Ask yourself, “What inspires me?” Whether it’s a picture of your family or friends…or maybe paintings from a certain artist, hang it up in your office! This way, when your eyes wander, you can re-inspire yourself. If you want to build a complete gallery wall of inspiration, we gave expert tips on creating a stylish gallery wall on our blog.
  5. Utilize natural lighting.
Let there be (natural) light! One of the best things about working at home is avoiding the corporate fluorescent lighting you often find in a normal office. Lighting is often overlooked, but it can immediately change your mood and productivity. If you don’t have access to natural lighting, you can create an ambient atmosphere with soft light bulbs and decorative lamps.
  6. Give your walls a fresh coat of paint.
Your office doesn’t have to reflect boring walls. Feel free to experiment with colors and how it affects the way you work. You might find that you work better in an environment painted a deep purple or rustic orange…

You know how important it is to create a space you love and enjoy, your home office is no exception. It might even be more important because this is where you do work. The home office is where personal and professional can come together.
