Leather Furniture Care Guide

Posted on January 18th, 2018 by Hannah.

Leather furniture is elegant, durable and a well-worth investment. That’s why it’s so important to treat it with care. This doesn’t mean that you need to cover it and protect it from use. Leather furniture just needs a little TLC to protect its shine and increase longevity. If you’re a family person, someone who is stain-prone or want to learn more about furniture care, you’ve come to the right place.

Leather Furniture Care Supplies:
This is an exhaustive list of supplies; you may not need or use all of these supplies.

  • Manufacturer’s furniture tag
  • Microfiber cloths for cleaning/drying
  • Clean rags for buffing
  • A bucket
  • Leather conditioner
  • Linseed oil
  • Vacuum with soft brush attachment
  • Commercial leather cleaner solution
  • Vinegar
  • Gentle soap (such as Dove)

General Leather Furniture Care Tips:
From regular cleaning to types of cleaners, here are your basic leather care tips to follow.

  1. Wipe or dust your leather sofa weekly. Using a vacuum with a soft attachment will help clean in between the cushions.
  2. Condition leather furniture every six to 12 months. Using leather conditioner regularly restores and protects your later from wear and weather.
  3. Turn and fluff cushions — this avoids wrinkling.
  4. Keep leather furniture away from too much sunlight exposure and heating vents, otherwise you risk fading, aging and drying leather faster.
  5. If you stain your furniture, take care of it immediately! Letting a stain sit will make it harder to get out.
  6. Test any cleaning method on an inconspicuous area or small area of the stain to see if the leather fades or reacts negatively to your cleaning method.
  7. For liquid stains, use a rag or microfiber to BLOT…don’t wipe.
  8. Never use harsh cleaners such as bleach and ammonia-based cleaners.
  9. If you’re in doubt, find a professional leather furniture cleaning company.

Clothing tags can be annoying, but your furniture tag can be the best guide for cleaning. From one leather sofa to the next, the type of leather can be different. Your furniture tag should provide tips on cleaning your specific furniture piece.

Leather Furniture Stain Cleaning Tips:

  • Vacuum first so you avoid rubbing dust or grime that might be around the stain.
  • There are many different cleaning solutions: equal parts water and white vinegar, a small amount of gentle soap or drops of commercial leather cleaner in water. There are also different cleaning suggestions depending on the type of stain – this is where your furniture tag comes in handy and testing a small area of the stain.
  • A microfiber works best, but you can also use a clean towel. It should be damp, not wet.
  • Have another towel on hand to dry.
  • Condition so that the leather can be restored and protected using a different soft, clean towel.
  • Buff with a clean rag to restore its shine.
