Those who make a living forecasting popular colors are part designer, part predictor, part sociologist, and maybe even part wizard. Each year they glean information from the runway, the housewares industry, the auto manufacturing industry, and even what’s happening culturally to ascertain how all this impacts the national mood. After assimilating all this data, they then translate it into the popular colors we will want to wear and use for interior design in the New Year.
Therefore, the housing crisis, an ongoing war, a historic election, and the economic downturn have all combined to shape our tastes in color for everything from cars to luxury furniture. According to the experts, we’re basically searching for comfort food in our colors. The shades of 2017 are the color equivalent of chicken and dumplings: safe, comforting, and traditional. However, there are pops of bright color that seem to suggest our outlook for the future is bright and hopeful.

This floral wall art brings in a soothing taupe, one of the colors of the year for 2017.
While color seems to add additional space to a room, artwork can often make or break a space. Artwork can be used to dictate or enhance a room’s color palette. So, if you’re feeling stuck with your design, try selecting a piece of artwork that fits the space and create a color palette influenced by the work. Consider this Leaves on Taupe Wall Art by Uttermost. This large assortment of leaf prints is accented with white mats featuring double v-groove details. The frames feature a satin black outer edge with champagne silver accent along the inner edges. The prints are under glass and the entire collection measures 17-1/2″ by 19-1/2″.

This sofa’s pale blue color, called “blue wren,” brings tranquility and elegance into any room.
While furnishings are often selected for comfort or utilitarian reasons, an important aspect of interior design is combining the colors of furnishings with the overall palette of the room or space. Many colors will add a soft vibrancy or peaceful sense of comfort by adding shades of contrast to an existing space. Consider the soft blue of this East Lake Sofa by Vanguard. This new color for 2017 fits with traditional neutral colors or contrasts nicely with other bold colors. It features a leather covering with classic mahogany wood feet and standard nail trim.

Accessories like this lavender pillow with its hourglass print offer an easy way to keep your home cutting-edge in the new year.
Do you want to add life to the color palette or personality of your home without redecorating? Adding splashes of color or pattern with accessories can add new life to old rooms and furnishings, yielding big results. Pillows are one of the easiest and quickest ways to experiment with color. Consider this lavender Printed Throw Pillow from Hallmart. It is a simple, inexpensive way to add some new color and comfort to your existing furnishings, and to experiment with colors before making larger investments.
The New Year is here and the time for experimentation is now. Are you contemplating a color experiment with your current or new interior design?
