Neutral Territory: Creating a Timeless (& Genderless) Kids’ Room

Decorate your children’s rooms in a fresh, modern way by steering clear of the clichéd equations of “girls’ rooms = pink” and “boys’ rooms = blue.” Think of the color possibilities you’re overlooking! Today, it’s all about embracing a gender-neutral design scheme for your littlest family members’ spaces. Whether you’re preparing for a new baby or building a shared space for a brother-sister duo, follow these easy design tips to put together rooms that don’t skimp on style.

The True Colors

Now that you’ve nixed the stereotypical hues, the rest of the spectrum is up for grabs. “Soft grey makes a picture-perfect neutral for baby boy or girl. Dress it up with feminine or masculine touches once you know your little bundle’s gender,” says Domino’s Liz Thompson. Greys and other subdued neutral shades create an ideal backdrop for pops of brightness in bedding, artwork, and decorative accessories. Another option is to go completely bold. “Sunshine yellow is not only appropriate for both girl and boy, but adds instant cheer to any room. Bright enough for playtime, subtle enough for naptime,” writes Thompson. An energetic and joyful color, yellow is also known to promote creativity and boost concentration.

F is for Functional

Depending on your kids’ ages, the room’s purpose will vary. While it’s, of course, designated mostly for sleeping, little ones also need space to play and learn. “When they are younger, most kids don’t need a fully functioning nightstand, so swapping it out for a desk [makes] the best use of the space while still giving them somewhere to work, draw or play,” stylist Emily Henderson shares on her blog. If you’re working with siblings in one room, bunk beds are always a solid choice — they’re space-saving and practical, and can be separated into individual beds when the kids get older. Classic pieces like bookshelves and storage ottomans give kids a place to keep their most prized possessions organized and within reach.

Perfectly Personal Touches

“While gender neutral is fun, it is always nice to give kids a little something that feels [like] their own and is special and personal to them,” says Henderson. The most important element to infuse into your child’s room is their unique personality. Incorporate their favorite colors and prints throughout, or pieces inspired by beloved cartoon characters and comic book heroes. And what kiddo doesn’t love animals? From puppies and horses to wild jungle creatures, a zoo theme is nearly foolproof. And let them put their own stamp on the space with a DIY gallery wall exhibiting their best watercolor and crayon creations.
