National Craft Month: Artisanal Design Elements

Designers, editors, and industry experts agree: 2019 is all about artisan style. From made-by-hand pieces to those with a handcrafted feel, anything that looks like it was created by an exceptionally skilled worker is an absolute must. Artisan-inspired decor and furnishings will add serious personality (and a sense of authenticity) to your space. As we celebrate National Craft Month this March, we’re highlighting a few simple ways to bring this design trend home.

Special Effects

It’s time to embrace the beauty of flaws. When something is carefully crafted by hand, its singularity makes a noticeable statement. “I’m seeing a lot more designers and makers reverting back to craft and finding ways to slow down,” interior designer Michala Monroe tells Apartment Therapy. “In our world of mass production, I am see many leaning toward these smaller batches, more ‘artisanal’ or ’boutique.’ Even larger companies are reaching out to smaller makers to create more unique goods where each piece has different handmade imperfections.” Lean in to the unique appeal of artisanal materials and techniques with selections from our showroom: Handmade Italian glass vasescolorful crochet baskets, and hand-dyed textile pillows

Made With Love

Décor Aid’s blog details: “Handmade furniture will always be on trend – there is nothing like having a piece of furniture in your room which screams craftsmanship and custom design. 2019 furniture trends are seeing us once again appreciating the more bespoke, hand-crafted pieces that we haven’t seen for a while. Keep the craft alive and do your bit to support artisanal skills by buying handmade.” Think big and focus on well-crafted pieces to define your most frequented spaces (e.g., the living room). Relax and unwind in this bohemian-style rocking chair, handmade from sturdy rattan — or give your TV a new home on this industrial console table, which is handcrafted from java wood and hand-hammered iron sheeting.

Decorative Details

Even the smallest artisanal touches can create a major style impact. “This will be the year of the craftsperson,” says LA designer John Linden. “Once upon a time, only bespoke cabinets and other woodwork were widely available. Now, you can find anything from sinks to shower-door hardware to wall decor from really cool vendors.” Wall art is an especially easy way to showcase eye-catching handmade elements. Find inspiration in our selection of gallery-worthy shadow boxes, which put everything from handmade and glazed ceramic cups to handmade paper art on display.
