Room Planning: What is It and Why Does It Matter?

Posted on September 7th, 2017 by Hannah.

Room planning – you’ve probably heard of it. Interior designers talk about it, but what is it really and why should it matter to you?

Think about one of these scenarios:

  • You’re in a space with a strange layout.
  • You’re in a tricky, small space.
  • You moved a large furniture piece in, but have no idea how to balance the rest of your room right.
  • You think it’s time for a room makeover.
  • You’re wondering, “What size should my rug be in this room?”
  • You’re about to move into a new space, but you’re unsure if everything will fit (or fit properly).

If this is you or has been a scenario for you, room planning is what you need!

Room Planning Benefits

With room planning, you can visualize your space and organize your furniture before it goes into your new space. If you’re doing a makeover, it helps you see where your “problem areas” might be and rearrange your furniture how it should be…without all the premature heavy lifting. Room planning can create balance by showing you what proportions you should utilize.

How Does Room Planner Work?

It doesn’t take much, but you will need: your room’s dimensions and your current furniture dimensions. If you are doing a complete room makeover, make two room plans (before & after) to see the changes in your layout. With Stowers Furniture Room Planner, you can easily drag and drop furniture, accessories, rugs, etc. from our catalog. When you’re satisfied with your room plan, you can print it out or email it to share with your friends.

Things To Keep In Mind

  • Consider the space you will need to open drawers and doors and avoid creating a space that might feel too cramped.
  • Make sure you also have enough room to walk around when it comes to bed placement. A good rule of thumb is at least two feet.
  • If you’re looking for a new sofa, here’s how you can choose the right sofa for your home.
  • Don’t forget about lighting! Think about how much lighting you need and where it should be placed. It’s one of the last things people think of, but the mood of your room can change with the right lighting.

Are you ready to elevate your space? Start with Room Planner (and don’t forget your measurements!). After you’re done, print it out and bring it to our showroom – we’d be happy to help you find what you need and answer any questions.
